The Winona softball team dropped an 8-7 Region 2-2A game to East Webster.
It was a see-saw game that saw Winona go ahead 5-3 with three runs in the fifth. East Webster tied the score with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Winona went up 7-5 with two in the sixth, but East Webster responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth for the win.
“We made one error and they hit the ball well,” Winona coach Steven Helms said of East Webster's winning rally.
Mycala Helms went four for four for Winona. Allyn-Claire Gant had three hits and Tommesha Brown and Melissa Pacillo two each.
The Lady Tigers are 3-2 in region play with five games remaining as they strive to qualify for the MHSAA 2A playoffs. “We have to win at least three of these last five games to get there so we're going to have to step up and play well,” coach Helms said.
“We've made a few changes and it has gotten better. We just hope it continues to get better.”
Three teams from each region qualify for the playoffs, with region winners receiving a first-round bye.
Winona was to play Calhoun City Tuesday. The Lady Tigers will have a busy three days with a road game against Eupora Thursday and home games Friday and Saturday with J.Z. George and Bruce. Calhoun City, Eupora and Bruce are region games.
