The Lady Tigers of Winona High School defeated Eupora 36-32 last week between losses to Calhoun City 59-34 and East Webster 53-19.
The Lady Tigers led Eupora 23-13 at the half and held on for the win. “Again, we didn't finish real well,” said coach Veronica Helms. “But I'm pleased. It's a district opponent.”
Eupora pulled within two in the fourth quarter, but Winona was able to maintain a lead.
Tommesha Brown led Winona with 15 points Tyra Weathersby had nine.
East Webster was a road game at a difficult place for a visiting team. “We had a hard time overcoming the atmosphere of their place,” Helms said. “It's a different kind of place to play. It's open on the ends. They have college type goals where there is nothing behind them. It's not a very friendly atmosphere and we just had a hard time with it.”
Weathersby and MyCala Helms had five points each.
Tigers
The Winona boys basketball team remained winless with losses to Calhoun City 69-61, Eupora 68-40 and East Webster 88-34.
Against Calhoun City, the Tigers cut a 14 point deficit to four in the final minutes, but came up short. Coach Presley Coleman attributed the loss to poor free throw shooting – the Tigers were 13-of-24 from the line — and 32 turnovers. “Turnovers are killing us," he said.
Freshman center Sean Merritt had a big game against Calhoun City with 12 points and 20 rebounds. Taveras Townsend scored 18 points and Robert McMath had 12.
Eupora led Winona 43-20 at the half and coasted to the win. McMath led the Tigers with 15 points, while Merritt had 12 points and seven rebounds.
East Webster outscored Winona 31-4 in the second quarter for a 60-19 halftime lead. “We got away from what we were doing in the first quarter,” Coleman said. “But give East Webster credit, they made a lot of threes. They just outhustled us.”
The Tigers played Bruce Tuesday and will be at Choctaw County next Tuesday.
