Winona Christian School held its annual Veterans Day Program on Friday, November 10, 2017, honoring all those who have served.
Students at Winona Christian helped lead the Ceremony. Lily Sheppard welcomed guests, Jacey Eldridge went on to say the prayer, and Ivey Divine led everyone in saying the Pledge of Allegiance. Jeanna Howard and student McKenzie Ingold sang the National Anthem. Mark Lawson, the director of North Mississippi Veterans Memorial Cemetery, gave the keynote address.
Lawson, a U.S. Navy Veteran, spoke about what a veteran is. He said a veteran is someone who defends the freedoms we as a country have and the freedoms that come with decision making.
He went on to say Americans have the ability to chose what we want to eat, where we want to go, what music we want to listen to, and if we choose to stand or not for the National Anthem, all because that veteran decided to defend these freedoms.
Lawson explained that today’s military service is voluntary, but not every veteran got to volunteer. Some of our most-wise veterans got drafted and did not get to choose, he said. Those who serve today had a choice, and they signed a piece of paper saying they will defend the constitution.
