Editor’s Note: Winona Times and The Conservative intern Savannah Burnett will feature a place or event each week through July as part of her Summer Spotlight series. Burnett can provide you the ins and outs of what is going on this summer in Carroll and Montgomery counties.
Recently, a new sight has popped up in downtown Winona.
After noticing the beautiful display of American flags at City Hall, I was left wondering what the reason and motivation behind the set-up was. Being only a few steps down the street from the newspaper office, I decided to walk on over and talk to whomever I could about the flags and maybe even take a few good pictures.
I ended up speaking to Dorothy Washington, who was responsible for the decorations. Washington was very excited and passionate about the message behind it all.
“I wanted to do something to support national holidays like Memorial Day, the 4th of July, and even Veterans Day. Honestly, I just wanted to do something showing our support for our troops and for America.”
Ordering over 40 large flags, Washington knew she wanted more than just a small flag or a red, white, and blue bow to put on the City Hall doors.
“I wanted to go big,” she added, as I complemented her on her drive and idea.
Washington doesn’t want people to feel a sense of patriotism and pride in our country on just the designated national holidays, but year-round. She stressed the importance of doing “the little things in life” to show one’s love for our country on the local and national scale.
“Let’s really show our support and love for our Veterans every day,” Washington said.
Savannah Burnett recently graduated from Grenada High School. She plans to attend the University of Mississippi in the fall where she will study at the School of Journalism.
