Spring! How wonderful you are. Warmer days are welcome, and outdoor yard work becomes a favorite time for me and many readers.
I took a quiz on my cellphone, one of many that seem to be popping up. Spelling, History, English and a host of thought-provoking sayings that are good and bring about a good laugh. Here are a few:
1. Age 60 might be the new 40, but 9:00 P.M. is the new midnight!
2. Remember, if you lose a sock in the dryer, it comes back as a Tupperware lid that does not fit any of your containers.
3. I don't mean to interrupt people, I just randomly remember some important things and get really excited.
4. When I say, "The other day, "I could be referring to anytime between yesterday and 15 years ago!
It's been said that we are all storytellers, that Southerners love to talk, and we are seldom at a loss for someone to talk to and stories to grow from. I remember the day daddy came home with 'Bob', a lanky, high strung strawberry roan horse that needed a home, and he found it on our hill. Not long after, another horse belonging to a friend of daddy's, needed a new home, so we were now in possession of two horses. Mama was worried that our place would not be sufficient for two horses, but daddy had a great idea on that. Bob was terrified of loud noises, and trucks in particular, which traveled by our home. With the grass getting high, daddy thought Bob could graze on the property. Mama said it would never work. With daddy wanting to tame this horse and ride him, his plan was to stake Bob out in the front yard while he worked the garden...Mama was still shaking her head.
The next morning, bright and early, daddy had his plan put into effect and Bob was enjoying his time out of the pasture. Soon, the cavalcade of large trucks made their way up and down Highway 51, and soon Bob and the medal stake were gone. Mama saw him at full speed, headed behind the levee of our pond. This story was told about daddy for many years! Daddy did finally come to the conclusion that Bob might be happier riding the old country roads, which the two of them did, visiting old friends, making new ones, a little excitement and good times. This went on for years. Just goes to show that you cannot teach an old horse new tricks...
I will remember daddy on Father's Day with these and other sweet memories of his laugh, and mother’s, and everyone who ever heard mama or daddy tell the story. Bob became a legend.
