Sheriff Clint Walker confirmed Friday morning that a Carroll County couple had been indicted on numerous felony charges of having sexual relations with four dogs.
On Thursday, a Grand Jury indicted both Michael Bobbitt and Christy Bobbitt in the 2022 bestiality case. Michael Bobbitt was originally arrested on Nov. 11, 2022, and charged with two felony counts of “unnatural intercourse with a beast,” a crime carrying a sentence of up to 10 years in prison if convicted. He was also charged with one count of sexual assault and one count of aggravated animal cruelty. The aggravated animal cruelty charge was due to injuries one of the dogs sustained. Following his arrest, he was placed behind bars at the Carroll-Montgomery Regional Correctional Facility.
The sexual assault charge was against his wife, Christy Bobbitt, who was charged with four counts of “unnatural intercourse with a beast.” She later turned herself in at the Grenada County Jail with her attorney present.
According to CCSD reports, after a search and seizure warrant was obtained, deputies procured evidence from the home, which included a laptop and four dogs. The dogs were taken to the In Defense of Animals’ Hope Animal Sanctuary in Grenada.
“We’re incredibly grateful to be in a position to help local law enforcement intervene on behalf of animals in immediate distress,” Sharon Stone, operations manager at In Defense of Animals’ Hope Animal Sanctuary, said. “These dogs deserved so much more than the abuse they suffered and now they’re getting a second chance to experience life as beloved family members.”
Michael Bobbitt was handed of $375,000 bond. His initial request to reduce the bond was denied, but the bond was later lowered to $50,000, the amount of which he was able to bail out on. Christy Bobbitt later made bail on a $20,000 bond.
“What happened to these four beautiful dogs is beyond disturbing,” Doll Stanley, Justice for Animals Senior Campaigner for In Defense of Animals, concluded. “We’re so glad they’re safe now and applaud Carroll County Sheriff Clint Walker and his deputies for acting swiftly to help them. This is yet another tragic case that proves violence to animals and humans is closely linked – those who abuse one will likely abuse the other. We must protect all members of our communities and seek justice.”
