We weren’t scared except when we scared ourselves!
It was a night we looked forward to with great excitement.
I’m writing this on Halloween, and the day will be over when you read this. But I’ve been thinking about how Halloween has changed in my lifetime.
I grew up in a small town with lots of neighborhoods that branched off of Main Street. We took it for granted that we were safe to walk, ride bikes, and explore from one end to the other.
My friends and I dressed up for Halloween, but I don’t remember any expensive, store bought costumes. We got bags of some sort and took off as twilight came, and we could say it was trick or treat time!
Did adults or parents go with us? Follow us in a car or truck? Ride us around to the choice houses?
Nope.
We ran free and wild imagining all sorts of stories about the houses we went to and rang the doorbell or knocked seeking out sweets.
We were on a circuitous route to the house of the “frog lady” of great renown among us kids. Not to do harm or insult—just to be brave enough to knock on the door.
Maybe we were braver in our costumes; feeling safe and unidentifiable. Maybe we were caught up in the mysterious night shadows around us. Maybe we were unaware of what real danger could be in those days, and flew through our risk taking childhood blissfully unaware of what might loom around us. We roamed the dark unafraid and energized in our home-made costumes and self-applied make up from our mama’s supply.
Dressing up, wearing a costume, assuming another identity—-it was fun.
But evil is real and the Bible tells us we face a real spiritual battle between good and evil.
As Christians, trusting in Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord, we are not defenseless! W put on the armor of God and go into the fight confidently!
Ephesians 6:13 is a good verse to memorize and do daily! “Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.” WOW! Read Ephesians 6:10-20. Amazing truth:
Put on the “belt of truth” (14), “breastplate of righteousness,” (14), feet covered with the “readiness that comes from the gospel of peace,” (15), the “Shield of faith” (16), the “helmet of salvation,” (17) and the “sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” (17). “And pray in the Spirit. . . “ (18)
Get your armor on take our stand for God!
See the day of evil?
