Explosions were coming from under the house!
Mama said that she was scared to death!
Big Auntie (her daddy’s sister who raised her like she was her own daughter) was startled and rushed outside, her apron flapping.
What in the world was happening?
It all started with the new way Auntie had learned to put up vegetables, or can them, at the home extension office. Real ways to can, and hopefully better ways to keep the delicious vegetables they grew on the farm.
Mama was right behind Auntie as they opened the root cellar door.
O My Heavens! What a horrible SMELL!
As Auntie examined the space, she saw the cans of peas she had canned the new way had spoiled, exploded, and spewed in a nauseous swash all over everything!
Mama said she would never forget that day! The scary noise, the terrible smell, the waste of all those delicious vegetables that spoiled and were useless. All the work for nothing.
I wish I knew all that Mama knew about how to can vegetables, even tho she may have learned the hard way, she did a great job of making soup stock, as she called it, and pickles.
When I need to learn about something about canning or freezing vegetables, I do a little research. Then I go to some of my very best resources, my wonderful church lady friends!
The Bible talks about food that spoils, did you realize that?
After Jesus was teaching and had fed the five thousand people with a boy’s; five loaves of bread and two fish in a miracle and then walked on water; he was on the other side of the sea. He people followed Jesus there. He said this to them.
“Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.” John 6:26-27 ESV
We work so hard in our lives for material things that break, spoil, or deteriorate to be of no use. We can only preserve things, wealth, riches so long. Jesus is saying invest in spiritual treasures and eternal life!
We can’t do enough or any good works to save ourselves, but must accept Christ by faith. Jesus says in John 6: 35, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”
Thank God, His gospel has been preserved and handed down to us.
