This state is home to people from all walks of life no matter what income level or geographic location, and there are many things in which Mississippians are passionate -- religion, politics, athletics, patriotism, and a desire to help their fellow man.
During this time of abundance as we give thanks for our many blessings, it brings to mind the reality of where we are in the closing weeks of 2021. I remember Lieutenant Governor Delbert Hosemann once said, “Mississippi is one great big community.” It really is, and that brings so many thankful blessings with it.
Just this week, food boxes were delivered, and that means so much to many families throughout the year, especially this week of Thanksgiving. That is an act of giving that makes a difference in lives in this community and communities across this area.
Just recently this community and others came together for Veteran’s Day celebrations at courthouses and other places across this area. That community spirit of helping others is so important.
On Thanksgiving Day, this state will have the tradition of supporting their favorite teams in the Magnolia State’s Egg Bowl. Ole Miss and Mississippi State will fans come together in person and even at a distance with the kickoff Thanksgiving Day in Starkville at Davis Wade Stadium.
Through many occasions as we come together, these cherished friendships are a lot to be thankful for this week and throughout the year.
It’s the parts of life -- having faith, family, friends, food, and shelter -- that brings much appreciation. All of that makes a big difference in having friends and neighbors that are there for you. From the loss of a loved one, loss of a job, pet, and devastation of loss a home, that community support along with our faith makes for an abundance of blessings. This area has always had a history of helping others.
One of the most difficult parts of Thanksgiving is grieving the loss of a loved one during this time when families and friends gather to celebrate the season together. Those family traditions often include sharing meals around a table, shopping, watching football games, and traveling to visit loved ones.
It’s important to remember the sorrows families across this nation have incurred this year, and we should pray for them. With a strong faith, we make it past those challenges together. With a strong spirit with reflecting on the past and optimism of the future.
We wish you and your family a healthy and safe Thanksgiving.
