Here at Thanksgiving, during this time of abundance as we give thanks for our many blessings, it brings to mind the reality that we are in the closing weeks of 2024. This past Sunday night I attended the Carrollton/North Carrollton Community Thanksgiving Worship Service at North Carrollton United Methodist Church. It was a wonderful service and there was a time of fellowship after the service.
I’m reminded that of all walks of life no matter what income level or geographic location, this state has many things in common that people are passionate about. These range from religion, politics, athletics, patriotism, and a desire to help their fellow man. Giving thanks to what we have brings reflection on this community and this great state.
I remember what former President George W. Bush once said, "Thanksgiving is a time for families and friends to gather together and express gratitude for all that we have been given, the freedoms we enjoy, and the loved ones who enrich our lives. We recognize that all of these blessings, and life itself, come not from the hand of man but from Almighty God."
Just recently this community, like many others, came together for a Veteran’s Day celebration at the courthouses and other places across this area.
Also our state has the tradition of supporting their favorite team in one of college football's most historic rivalries which will once again receive televised coverage this year. It will be from ABC network this Friday as the battle for the Golden Egg will kick off at Vaught Hemingway Stadium in Oxford at 2:30 p.m. This is Mississippi at its best, gathering to support our teams in this historic traditional football game as we come together the day after Thanksgiving.
Also we remember that one of the most difficult part of Thanksgiving is the loss of a loved one during this time when families and friends gather to celebrate the season together. Whether it’s sickness, those less fortunate, and those grieving, it’s important to remember there have been many low times that families across this nation have incurred. With a strong spirit reflecting on the past and optimism of the future. We wish you and your family a healthy and safe Thanksgiving 2024.
