On April 10, the Friends of the Winona-Montgomery County Library hosted a program featuring the First Lady of Mississippi, Elee Reeves, in celebration of National Library Week. The special event took place at the Moore Memorial Methodist Family Life Center in Winona. To enhance the occasion, delightful finger foods were served, and the Winona Garden Club decorated the venue with beautiful tablescapes.
Friends of the Library President, Bootsie Weed, commenced the program by introducing the esteemed guest, First Lady Elee Reeves, along with her team, and extended gratitude to Moore Memorial Methodist Church. Following this, she elaborated on the significance of National Library Week, acknowledging each librarian within Montgomery County: Wendy Rushing from the Winona-Montgomery County Public Library, Dena Rainey from the Duck Hill Public Library, and Sandra Britt from the Kilmichael Public Library.
“We can’t say enough about our librarians and the Friends of the Library,” Mrs. Weed said.
Mrs. Weed then introduced Senator Lydia Chassaniol, who proceeded to share more about the special guest, Elee Reeves. Senator Chassaniol elaborated on First Lady Reeves' life, family, as well as the charitable and civic organizations she dedicates her time to volunteering with.
“I am so honored today to be able to introduce to you the First Lady of the state of Mississippi,” Senator Chassaniol said.
Once introduced, First Lady Reeves took the stand to share a presentation on literacy, highlighting her recent publication, “Mississippi’s Fred the Turtle”. This activity book is about a turtle named Fred, a sea turtle from the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The objective of this book aims to foster engaging conversations essential for child development and problem-solving skills. Additionally, she expressed her lifelong love for reading and its importance in children’s lives.
“I truly admire those who have the ability to tell a story and make a reader feel like they’re in it,” First Lady Reeves explained.
