At the 2024 Extension Yard and Garden Program, Dr. James DelPrince imparted a nugget of wisdom to the audience: "Just because it's there doesn't mean you have to use it!"
His remark sparked nods and chuckles, setting a tone of thoughtful consideration amidst the gathering. Emphasizing the principle of "Less is more," DelPrince, while demonstrating innovative floral design techniques, encouraged those interested in floral design to enroll in the newly introduced Master Floral Designer course.
Echoing the structure of its older companion course, Master Gardener, the Master Floral Designer program includes training followed by yearly volunteer service commitments. Phase 1 encompasses online class instruction, while Phase 2 involves immersive four-day training sessions conducted by DelPrince himself at his Biloxi studio. Phase 3 offers Floral Designer trainees the opportunity to extend their learning by giving back to their communities.
Among the array of tips shared by Dr. DelPrince were the importance of angle-cutting flower stems, shaping fresh flower foam bricks for round floral arrangements, and utilizing Extension resources for mastering floral bow tying techniques. He emphasized the strategic approach of building arrangements starting with the line, progressing to the mass, and then incorporating filler elements.
