Winona boys and girls track teams were dominant in winning the Region 2-2A meet last week at the Eugene Harris Memorial Track. The boys won five events and the girls seven.
The boys finished with 169 points to 94 for runner-up Strayhorn. They were followed by Leflore County and East Union with 76 points each, Calhoun City 58, Eupora 27, Walnut 22, Ingomar 19 and East Webster 6.
The Lady Tigers rolled up 175 points, 66 more than second place Calhoun City. East Union had 81, Ingomar 54, Walnut 37, East Webster 32, Leflore County 30 and Strayhorn 24.
The Tigers were especially strong in the relays, winning the 400, 800 and 1600 and finishing third in the 3200. The other two wins were Tavares Townsend in the triple jump with a leap of 37 feet 4 inches and Jalen Phillips in the shot put with a throw of 40-2. Townsend also took second in the long jump and Phillips was third in the shot put.
The 400 relay team of Jaylyn Sanders, Tracy Chandler, Adavion Hargrove and Ahmad Robinson won with a time of 45.10. The same quartet won the 800 in 1:34.23. Chandler anchored the 1600 team to victory in 3:42. He was joined by Malcolm Gholston, Andarious Coffey and Jabrell Davis.
Tyra Weathersby and Krystle Hughes had outstanding performances for the Winona girls. Weathersby won the 400 in 1:05.28, long jump (16-9) and triple jump (34-8). Hughes finished first in the 100 with a clocking of 12.47 and 200 (25.71) and tied for third with teammate Lataria Ellis in the high jump (4-5). Ellis also finished second in the 100 hurdles and fourth in the 300 hurdles. Natori Weathersby won the discus (104-10) and was third in the shot put.
The top four in each event advance to the North State meet that Winona will host Saturday.
Other boys who qualified: Gholston, second in the 400, third in the high jump and fourth in the 200; Hargrove, second in the 300 hurdles and third in the 110 hurdles; Robinson, third in the 100 and 200; Chandler, third in the 400; Andarious Coffey, third in the 300 hurdles; Antonio Kinnell, fourth in the high jump; and Sanders, fourth in the long jump. Isaach Leech, Derrick Blaylock and Dalton Murphy finished second, third and fourth in the pole vault.
Other girls qualifiers are Latericka Finchis, second in the shot put and fourth in the discus; Aasjahla Garron, third in the 100, fourth in the long jump and fourth in the pole vault; Tyonna Ford, third in the triple jump and Cassie Thomas, fourth in the 800. The 400 relay team was second and the 800, 1600 and 3200 teams finished third.
