If you enjoyed seeing the old pictures of Carrollton and North Carrollton on “The Reivers” Facebook page this past fall, as part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the Steve McQueen movie, mark Saturday, February 2. The Carroll County Society for the Preservation of Antiquities will host the annual A Taste of Soup and Art Exhibit at the Carrollton Community House. More old pictures from around Carroll County will be on exhibit and will be featured in the cookbook.
For a $10 donation to the Antiquities Society, guests will enjoy a taste of six new soups along with the official event cookbook. The soups include Cozy Pasta Parmesan Soup, Nacho Potato Soup, Pizza Soup, Sausage and Grits Chowder, Tortellini Beef Soup, and Turnip Green Soup.
Artists are still being confirmed, and more information will be released on those being featured at a later time.
Members and Friends of the Antiquities Society are selling the tickets now. They are also available at the Carrollton or the North Carrollton Town Hall.
According to Carrollton Mayor Pam Lee, the Antiquities Society is also known as the Carroll Society for the Preservation of Antiquities. The purpose is to preserve the county’s history through the Merrill Museum and the preservation of other buildings. The organization owns the Merrill Building and the former Conservative newspaper office and it has a have a 99-year lease on the old Carroll County Jail.
“Work is slow but always needed,” Lee said. “To date we have replaced the floor joists and floors in the north and south rooms of the old jail and repaired and replaced the roof. At the Merrill Building we have made structural repairs that approach $100,000 as well as expand the museum exhibits. Even now, plans are being made to add some more school related exhibits. When funds are available, we also have some work that needs to be done on the Conservative office. Another project that we have is to decorate the Courthouse, fence and Merrill Museum for Christmas. Each year thousands of lights burn day and night and need replacing on a regular basis.”
Funds for all these projects come from membership dues, donations, the Pioneer Day Festival booth rental and grants. This year marks the first year that the proceeds from A Taste of Soup will be used by the Antiquities Society. Dues are $20 per person or $40 per family.
