CARROLLTON -- At Tuesday’s meeting of the Carrollton Mayor and Board of Alderman, the board opened bids for the town’s garbage service and for grass mowing/ditch maintenance. Representatives from each company present spoke and also answered questions.
The board took the bids under advisement and will vote on them next month. The clerk was directed to make a comparison chart with costs and services for the board to determine the best option in each case.
The board also discussed applications for town attorney. This too was tabled until the September meeting.
Galen Shumaker, Carrollton’s water operator, reported on several ongoing projects and asked the board’s direction. Allen Lee asked about the cause of the recent water outages. Shumaker said it was related to power outages.
Lee asked if there was some sort of notification system that could alert officials before the water level got too low. Shumaker said that there was, although the last time he had checked on the price it was very expensive. However, he said he would check again as technology is always changing so there may be something more affordable now.
The board reviewed a number of issues addressed in the July meeting:
The Barnes Street project to bypass a failing bridge. Homeowners will be notified when the work is ready to begin.
Another issue was the matter of signs that need to be installed. A “Fire Lane – No Parking” sign will be installed at the south end of the Neill Farms building on Lexington Street. Although the fire department has painted red no parking lines, they have faded. When cars park on both sides of the street, a fire truck or ambulance cannot get through.
“No Parking” signs will also be posted in front of Carroll Academy. The board noted that it appreciates the efforts made last year by the school to improve school-related traffic flow issues. Headmaster Bo Milton has informed the Mayor Pam Lee that he will be posting signs exiting the school onto College Street that say “No Right Turn,” which will direct the traffic down Hafner Street to the ball fields or to Lexington Street.
The board also designated Hafner Street to be a one-way street from College down to the well yard. This is a year-round, 24-our-a-day, seven-day-a-week designation. A sign will be west of the well yard drive, providing people a place to turn around if necessary.
