The J.Z. George Jaguars were to enter the Region 3-3A tournament Tuesday which will be held in Greenwood..
Both J.Z. George teams were to play Yazoo County in elimination games. The winners will qualify for the upcoming Class 3A state tournament.
“We have something to play for,” Coach Jonathan Childs said. “The regular season didn’t go quite like we would have liked. But we have a young team and they have and they have worked hard. We have shown improvement.”
The Jaguars played two games last week, losing 83-31 to Amanda Elzy, and 72-52 to Ruleville Central.
Amanda Elzy took a big lead in the first half as they proved too much for the Jaguars.
The Panthers led 20-10 after the first quarter. Amanda Elzy outscored J.Z. George 26-9 in the second quarter and led 46-19 at the half. The Panthers would outscore the Jaguars 37-12 in the second half.
Malik Branch scored 10 points for the Jaguars while Keldrick Glover added six points.
Ruleville Central came up with a big second quarter as they took the win over the Jaguars.
J.Z. George trailed 17-11 after the first quarter. Ruleville outpointed the Jaguars 29-10 in the second quarter and led 46-22 at the half.
The Jaguars weren’t done as they outscored the Panthers 16-11 in the third quarter. Both teams scored 15 points in the final quarter and Ruleville Central escaped with the victory.
Branch led with 15 points while Malik Christian added 11 points.
