A New Year’s Day fire in Winona left one home with substantial damage.
According to Winona Fire Chief Brad Mooneyham, firefighters responded to a call on January 1 at 6:55 a.m. to a home at 568 Bluff Springs Road in Winona.
According to Mooneyham, a neighbor had seen smoke coming from the home’s attic area and called 911. The residents of the home were sleeping inside and awakened by the neighbor.
According to the report by Captain Barrett Johnson, flames were coming from the roof on the back of the house. The firefighters were able to contain the fire to the attic and the back two bathrooms, leaving heavy smoke and water damage to the home.
“The attic was basically charred,” Mooneyham said.
No one was injured in the fire, and it took the department two hours to extinguish it.
Mooneyham said a cause of the fire is still unknown.
