With more than a week to prepare for it's next game, Winona boys basketball coach Presley Coleman is hopeful the Tigers will finally be able to secure a first win of the season. Following the Christmas break, Winona will begin MHSAA Region 2-2A play Tuesday with a home game against Leflore County.
“We're going to be working on our defense and trying to scrimmage some to simulate game situations,” Coleman said. ”We have six practices. It's the most practices we have had this year to prepare for a game.”
The Tigers were unable to practice the week between Christmas and New Year's due to work on the gym floor, but Coleman feels that could be a benefit. “Having a week off gave everyone a chance to rest up, be 100 percent, and get ready to go.”
Following the Leflore County game, Winona has a rematch with county rival Montgomery County. The Hornets defeated the Tigers a month ago on their way to the championship of the Winona tournament.
Lady Tigers
Winona girls basketball coach Veronica Helms plans to do a little scouting Friday night.
Following the Christmas break, the Lady Tigers begin play in MHSAA Region 2-2A next Tuesday against Leflore County. Helms will have a chance to see Leflore County in action Friday against Eupora.
With a record of 6-6, Helms feels good about her team, but said , “If we could score a little more consistently, I'd feel a lot better. We score in spurts here and there, this person and that person, but we're not really consistent.”
Helms said junior guard Tommesha Brown has been the team's most consistent player. “She does a good job handling the ball. She played a lot last year, but she didn't have to be the leader so she's learning the leadership role this year.”
The Lady Tigers will be at Montgomery County Jan. 12 in a rematch from a month ago. The Lady Hornets won 31-27 in a game that determined the championship of Winona's tournament.
