The Montgomery County girls basketball team ran its winning streak to nine games with victories over Water Valley 36-21 and Kosciusko 45-39.
“The first game we came out a little slow, but at the same time, we played really good defense,” coach Jeremy Robinson said of the win over Water Valley. “It became a team effort on the defensive end.”
Tatyana Womack, Tatyana Kenney, Bianca Lane, Arkeveah Gayden and Jasmine Salley all played well against Kosciusko, according to Robinson. Salley was in the starting lineup because Jasmine Ratliff missed the game due to sickness. “She gave us some good minutes,” Robinson said.
The Lady Hornets reached the Christmas break with a 12-4 record. “It's all coming together and I feel like it's coming together at a good time,” Robinson said.
Montgomery County has a home game with Winona Jan. 12. The Lady Hornets won a previous matchup 31-27 for the championship of the Winona tournament.
Hornets
The Montgomery County boys basketball team saw its eight-game winning streak snapped with a tough 62-60 loss to Kosciusko.
“That's a one-loss 4A school, so we're not disappointed,” Hornets' coach Frank Miller said about Kosciusko, which is 9-1. “A 4A school should beat a 1A school any day.”
Montgomery County rallied late, but ran out of time. After cutting the deficit to two, the Hornets fouled just as time expired.
“We're happy with our effort. We just had too many turnovers that led to easy baskets for them,” Miller said.
Decoreyon Small scored 25 points and Jalen Daniel had 13 for Montgomery County.
The Hornets' eighth straight win was a 59-52 victory over Water Valley. Montgomery County led 32-20 at the half and maintained the lead throughout the second half.
Small scored 29 points and Katacion Winfrey had 19, as the Hornets made 14 of 18 free throws.
“We played pretty well,” Miller said. “We were fortunate to come out of it with a win.”
