North Carrollton Mayor Ken Strachan met with Dr. Fletcher Harges, Marshall Elementary School principal, and the fourth grade teachers on Wednesday morning and delivered the Mississippi Municipal League Coloring and Activities Books for Elementary Students.
The effort is a result of the MML resolution recognizing Municipal Government Week, January 13-19, 2019, that Strachan presented at the November town board meeting and North Carrollton alderman approved.
The MML and the Town of North Carrollton have joined together to teach students about municipal government. The project with students participating in the municipal coloring and activities book recognizes the important role played by municipal government in the lives of the citizens.
There are 78 students in the fourth grade level at Marshall Elementary that will be participating in the project. The completed work will be judged by Marshall Elementary administration, and there will be an overall winner, and first, second, third, and fourth place recognized who will be presented a certificate of recognition by Mayor Strachan the week of Municipal Government Week in January.
Marshall Elementary School is the public elementary school that serves all of Carroll County.
Strachan said, “We look forward to North Carrollton and Marshall Elementary working together with students, municipal government is the government closest to most citizens, and the one with the most direct daily impact upon its residents. This is an educational project for students to learn more about North Carrollton and encourage civic involvement.”
The MML coloring book covers basic information from public safety to services such as the water department and a word search puzzle on words about municipal government.
Over 50 percent of Mississippi citizens live in a city, town, or village, and it is part of MML’s and North Carrollton’s long term effort to increase public support for and involvement in municipal government, as well as provide a means to raise awareness of the wide range of services provided by municipalities and encourage citizen involvement.
Strachan, who also serves as a member of the MML Board of Directors, has been getting the project in motion for North Carrollton since November.
Harges said, “Marshall Elementary is excited about this project. The teachers were very excited to meet with the mayor, and the students are also excited to participate. Thank you Mayor Strachan and the Mississippi Municipal League for allowing Marshall Elementary to participate, it is an honor.
