Melinda Sanders Alderman is seeking the post of Carroll County Tax Assessor/Collector, and she has qualified to run on the Democratic ticket.
“I believe there is a need in the tax assessor/collector’s office, and I firmly believe I am fit to fill that need,” Alderman said.
Alderman, who has lived in Carroll County all of her life, said after many prayers and reflection, she decided to run for the position. She said it is a way she can give back to her home community and the people she has known her entire life.
“I am asking for the opportunity to serve the people of Carroll County,” Alderman said.
Alderman said if she is elected to the position, she plans to focus on service.
“I would like to improve customer service,” Alderman said. “Everyone needs to be treated with a certain level of respect. They need to feel like those working in the tax office can assist them in any way and do whatever is necessary to answer any and all questions.”
With service as her focus, Alderman said she would also like to look at keeping the tax office open through the lunch hour to allow citizens to handle personal business on their lunch hour.
“Many people are working from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., and their lunch hour is the only time they have to take care of personal errands,” Alderman said.
Alderman said she would love to digitalize county records and would like to lead the charge to create a county website to view tax information, land records and deeds, and other public records.
“I think it would be beneficial to provide citizens the opportunity to pay online for car tags and property tax,” Alderman said.
Alderman is the daughter of Dr. Jack and Mary Sanders of North Carrollton. Married to Hunter Alderman, a taxidermist, for 18 years, the couple has three children, Austin, 16, Emree, 15, and Drake, 12.
She attended Carroll Academy and graduated from Winona Academy in 1993. She went on to the University of Mississippi where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1998. She went on to pharmacy school where she received her Doctorate of Pharmacy in 2000.
A member of Carrollton Baptist Church, Alderman works as a pharmacist for Walmart in Greenwood.
“I am self-motivated to study and learn all I can about serving as tax assessor/collector,” Alderman said. “I believe I will be a good public servant, always seeking to improve myself and the efficiency of the tax office for the citizens of Carroll County.”
Alderman said working with the public for more than 15 years, she has been blessed to have worked with people of all walks of life.
“In all circumstances, we need to show compassion, despite the situation,” Alderman said.
Alderman said she is looking forward to hearing concerns and ideas for improvements at the tax office from citizens of Carroll County during the upcoming campaign.
“I am so thankful for the overwhelming support from the community so far, and I am asking for you to vote for me in the upcoming election,” Alderman said.
