Carroll and Montgomery county officials responded to a three-vehicle accident that resulted in two deaths on Interstate 55 early Thursday morning in Carroll County near the Carroll/Grenada county line.
“The Carroll County Emergency Operations Center received the call at 2:48 a.m.,” Carroll County Emergency Management/Civil Defense Director Ken Strachan said. “All three 18 wheelers were traveling northbound.”
Carroll County Coroner Mark Stiles and Montgomery County Coroner Alan Pratt responded and pronounced the two dead at the scene. The deceased have not yet been identified.
“One of the 18 wheelers was carrying alcohol beverages, that had an additional trailer hooked to it,” Strachan said. “The collision caused a spill that resulted in the interstate being closed and traffic detoured to Highway 51 from I-55.”
The other two 18 wheelers were also carrying loads which spilled along the roadway. One was carrying pineapples and the other rubber gloves.
“I talked with agents with the Department of Environmental Quality this morning and the Mississippi Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) has been notified,” Strachan said.
The Carrollton/North Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department, Winona Fire Department, Duck Hill Volunteer Fire Department, Elliott Volunteer Fire Department, Montgomery County Emergency Management, Carroll County Emergency Management, Carroll County Sheriff Department, MedStat EMS, Mississippi Department of Transportation, and Mississippi Highway Patrol responded.
