A standoff between law enforcement and a fugitive on Friday morning ended peacefully.
William Lee Barry, 47, of Winona surrendered to authorities and was taken into custody by law enforcement after an hours-long standoff at a residence on Sterling Street in Winona.
According to Captain Dan Herod, chief investigator for the Winona Police Department, a four months-long, joint investigation between the Winona Police Department and the U.S. Marshals’ Fugitive Task Force led officers to believe Barry was inside the house on Sterling Street. Officers arrived at 7:40 a.m. this morning for a search of the residence.
“After a search of the residence, we were able to locate him in the attic of the house,” Herod said.
Herod said the investigation led police to “establish a pattern over a period of time” of when Barry would be at the residence.
He said officers were able to establish communication with Barry, who had barricaded himself in the attic of the house, but that communication failed when Barry refused to come out.
“We contacted Starkville [Police Department] SWAT, and after they arrived, we were able to open up communication with him again,” Herod said. “After that, he surrendered.”
Law enforcement escorted Barry out of the residence just after 10 a.m.
Assistant District Attorney Brandon Langford said Barry was wanted in Grenada County after he failed to appear for trial in February 2020. He is facing an indictment of burglary of a dwelling, attempted rape, and aggravated assault in connection with an incident that occurred in the City of Grenada on September 15, 2018.
“We want to thank the U.S. Marshals, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department, Starkville Police Department, and the District Attorney’s office for their help in this investigation,” Herod said.
Barry was transported to the Grenada County Jail.
