With Carroll Academy just a few weeks away from beginning district play, there has been a change at the top of the baseball program.
Carroll Academy baseball coach Zach Whitfield informed The Winona Times on March 10 that he had been relieved of his duties at the school.
Whitfield said he was relieved of his duties, effective immediately, and paid out the remainder of his contract.
Assistant Austin Woodall was promoted to interim head coach and will finish out the season with the Rebels. Carroll was 5-5 on the season going into this week’s games.
Carroll Academy Athletics Director Jeff Dalton said he couldn’t comment on the decision to remove Whitfield in the middle of the season, saying it was a personnel matter. But Dalton did confirm that Woodall would be the interim head coach to finish out the season.
“It’s a personnel matter and that’s all I can say,” Dalton said. “I can’t comment any further except to say that coach Woodall will be the interim coach through the end of the season.”
Whitfield was also the girls fast-pitch softball coach and led the team to a 14-11 record this past season and finished tied for fifth in the Class 4A North State Tournament, falling to Winona Christian and Oak Hill in the tournament.
