Carroll County’s 2023 election cycle has officially kicked off! Seats for 17 offices are up for election or re-election.
According to an announcement from the County Circuit Clerk, Durward Stanton, eight positions are currently filled by incumbents who will be running unopposed. These incumbents include Chancery Clerk Casey Carpenter, Stanton, Coroner Mark Stiles, Prosecuting Attorney Lori M. Bell, Southern Justice Court Judge Tinesha Erve-Earnest, District 3 Supervisor Edward Dill Tucker, Election Commissioner Beat 2 Rebecca Touchstone and Election Commissioner Beat 4 David Burkhead. All incumbents with the exception of Stiles, Touchstone and Burkhead are members of the Democratic Party. Stiles is a member of the Republican party, while the two election commissioners are not party affiliated. In a meeting on Monday, the Carroll County Board of Supervisors voted to approve the qualifying statements of Touchstone and Burkhead, since their positions are not party affiliated.
There are four candidates running for the Sheriff’s office. Incumbent Clint Walker will be facing off with two other members of the Democratic Party, Milton Smith and James Stovall, along with Independent Michael H. Peeples.
Incumbent Joe Holman of the Democratic Party will be running against Dustin Haddon of the Republican party for the Northern district Constable.
Travis Oswald Gatewood and Demarcus Peeples of the Democratic Party will be running against incumbent Roshaun Daniels, who is also of the Democratic Party.
Incumbent District 1 Supervisor James A Neill Jr. of the Democrat party will be running against fellow Democrat Scott Montgomery, and incumbent District 2 Supervisor Josh Hurst will be running against fellow Democrat Terry G. Brown. Incumbent District 4 Supervisor Claude Fluker will be running against fellow Democrats Jerry Branch, Leon Hallmon Jr. and Republican Charles F. Humphrey.
As District 5 Supervisor Rickie Corley will not run in the upcoming election, there are seven candidates running for the District 5 spot. Randy Keith Browning, William ‘Bill’ R. Cade Jr., Wayne Henson, Jackie McKinney, Christy Noah, and Jerry Tucker of the Democratic Party and Independent Frankie Robbins will all be putting their bid in for the position.
Due to the retirement of long-time Tax Assessor Wilton Neal, three candidates will be running for the office. Chris Downs, Donna Gregg Harper and Tammy J. Inmon of the Democrat party will be facing each other this fall.
Greg Avant and Ronnie Hicks of the Democratic Party will be running for the Justice Court Judge of the North district seat.
