After two weeks of practice, the Carroll Academy Rebels got to hit somebody different on Friday.
The Rebels traveled to Cleveland and scrimmaged against Bayou and Canton.
Coach Bo Milton said it was a typical scrimmage.
“We saw some good things and saw some things we need to work on,” Milton said. “I thought we were more consistent on defense than the offense. I thought we flew to the ball on defense and were very physical, and that’s what I thought we would be. Most importantly, I thought the effort and physicality was there. We need to correct some little things, and I think we will be fine.”
Milton said he was also pleased with the offense as well, especially with the passing game.
“I thought we ran the ball pretty decent and were better up front than last year,” Milton said. “I thought we threw the ball decent. We ran like 22 plays and threw it like eight or nine times. We caught five or six of those. I tried to be 60-40 run-pass and throw a lot of short, quick stuff.”
Milton said he came away from the scrimmage with plenty the Rebels need to work on.
“There are some things we need to work on up front,” Milton said. “We have to work on some of our protections in the passing game. We didn’t stay on our blocks like I would like. I thought we only had one negative play with the starters. I thought the conditioning was decent and we will keep on working on that. Defensively, we missed some tackles that we should have made. There are just some fundamental things we need to work on.”
The Rebels will have a short week as they prepare for the Tri-County jamboree on Thursday. Carroll will play Riverfield at 2:30 p.m. and Central Hinds at 4:30 p.m.
“Riverfield will be a good test,” Milton said. “They have been a good team in Class 4A the last couple of years. Central Hinds is a 5A school and that’s what we need. Riverfield will be more ground and pound while Central Hinds will be more spread. It’s always good to look at two different offenses.”
The Rebels open the season on Aug. 19 at Winona. Christian.
