The Winona Board of Aldermen held their first meeting of the month on Tuesday, Nov. 4. The meeting began as usual with the approval of the minutes, payment of regular bills, water and sewer adjustments, and rental deposit reimbursements for the Community Center and House.
The board then approved the final pay application for the Front Street paving project and the engineering services final invoice. They also approved for City Attorney Adam Kirk to attend the Winter MMA conference.
Discussion then turned to the upcoming We are Winona event happening this Saturday. Ward 3 Alderwoman Katrina Bays, who has been organizing the event, requested up to $5,000 in funding.
Alderwoman Bays answered questions from other board members about the event, including what the funds would be used for. She said the money would cover entertainment, bounce houses, and other event-related fees.
"I'm not saying we'll use the entire $5,000, but this is to promote tourism for Winona. Winona's not going to profit off of it. This is just to promote tourism," Bays explained.
Bays plans for this to be an annual event that can help attract visitors to the city and grow over time. Ward 4 Alderman Charles Harris made a motion to approve the funds, seconded by Ward 1 Alderman Mickey Austin. The motion passed unanimously.
The board then reviewed two quotes for upgrades to the Community Center from Cory Lindley ($49,250) and K2 Construction ($99,881). The board accepted Lindley's quote.
The last highlight of the meeting was during Police Chief Roshaun Daniels' report. Daniels stated that he just wrapped up his annual calendar sales for the year. These funds go toward equipment for the Police Department.
"I would like to thank the businesses and individuals who donated this year for the calendar," Daniels said.
He went on to explain that these funds will go toward surveillance cameras for the city.
