I'm betting that one of the most unappreciated spots in Hattiesburg is downtown's Walnut Square. As the name gives away, it's located on Walnut Street — where else? That end of Walnut is surprisingly active, with a number of businesses concentrated in the area, including the charming Walnut Square Pharmacy & Gifts, a delightful departure from the bland, corporate big-box pharmacies on the west side of Hattiesburg. The store is filled with one-of-a-kind gift items that you won't find anywhere else in town.

Little by little, the impact of the 2026 ice storm is easing. As I write this, most of Carrollton has electricity. And most of Carrollton has limbs that need disposing of. The responsibility of disposing of limbs and other tree debris from individual properties has always been the responsibility of the property owners. During a disaster like this one, there is a possibility for help moving the debris from the street or roadside through a federal disaster declaration. Here are Carrollton’s options for cleanup.

Below is a political opinion column by Russ Latino:
Calvin Coolidge slashed spending and the national debt. He cut taxes and championed American business. Coolidge ushered in the unbridled success of the Roaring 20s, and yet, he’s forgotten.
At a Washington dinner party, a socialite sidled up to President Calvin Coolidge with a mischievous smile. “Mr. President,” she said, “I’ve made a bet that I can get you to say more than three words.”
Coolidge looked at her, expression unchanged, and replied, “you lose.”

EUNICE, La. — The No. 7 Pearl River softball team hit the road Sunday for a top-15 showdown with No. 13 LSU Eunice. The Wildcats dropped a hard-fought opener, 3-2 in extra innings, before responding with an emphatic 8-4 win in the nightcap to earn the split.
"This is the first time we've been on the road and had to play someone at their house," head coach Christie Meeks said. "It was a great learning experience against a really good team fighting on its home field, and I'm proud of how we responded after an emotional game."

It was only fitting that a series that felt more like a Super-Regional in June than an opening weekend in February ended in chaos.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth and the crowd at Pete Taylor Park on its feet, Matthew Russo never saw a strike. UC Santa Barbara reliever Nic Peterson missed four times, and Russo raised his arms as Seth Smith touched home plate, giving Southern Miss a 6-5 walk-off victory to clinch a dramatic opening weekend series against UCSB.
