The Coast State Senator thanks President Trump for his endorsement but says “it’s not my time.” He will seek re-election to the Mississippi Legislature in 2027.
Despite an endorsement from President Donald Trump (R), State Senator Joel Carter (R) said Friday that he would not be running for Mississippi Secretary of State in the 2027 election cycle.
“I appreciate the President’s endorsement for Secretary of State,” Carter wrote on social media. “Family comes first and it’s not my time.”

Mississippi Treasurer David McRae is the 55th Treasurer for the State of Mississippi. In this role, he helps manage the state’s cash flow, oversees College and Career Savings Mississippi, and has returned more than $140 million in unclaimed money to Mississippians. For more information, visit Treasury.MS.gov.
This month, I had the honor of testifying before the Mississippi Senate Universities and Colleges Committee about the strength of Mississippi’s College and Career Savings program. My message was simple and direct: Mississippi’s education savings programs are strong, stable, and built for the future.
That was not always the case. When I took office, the MPACT Legacy program, which allows families to lock in rates and prepay college tuition, was only 72 percent funded and headed toward a taxpayer-funded bailout. That was unacceptable.

Recycle for decoration
By Felder Rushing
Ever on the lookout for stuff I can reuse or recycle from holiday decorations, Christmas is second to none. Even better than composting Halloween pumpkins.
Back when I used to go with fresh-cut trees to decorate, I recycled them after the holidays. Each yielded beautiful evergreen needles perfect for garden mulch, plus a sack of kindling from cut-up branches and small stack of fast-lighting firewood logs.

It was another widely successful football season in the Pine Belt.
Eight of the nine area teams reached the postseason, continuing a trend of consistent success across the region, while Hattiesburg’s run to the state championship game for the second consecutive season stood out as the defining storyline of the fall.
With the season now complete, it is time to recognize the top performers from across the Pine Belt.

Ole Miss football vs Tulane in the First Round of the College Football Playoffs in Vaught Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, MS. (Photo special to the Pine Belt News from Ole Miss Athletics.)
Sometimes I wonder when I have children if they will whine more than college football “analysts” and media personalities. Seriously, I turn on ESPN and all they are doing is whining about the Group of Five getting two teams in instead of Notre Dame being in the playoff.
I turn on Fox Sports and they are complaining that there aren’t enough “good games” in the first round. I scroll Twitter and see post after post complaining about this and complaining about that.
It makes me ask myself: IS ANYONE HAPPY?

Everyone who follows football in the area likely assumed this season would be a transition year for Hattiesburg after legendary head coach Tony Vance announced his retirement last year.
Vance finished his career with a 157-64 coaching record, and Hattiesburg was also losing star quarterback Deuce Vance.
In February, Hattiesburg High School announced it would hire Kendall Lacey as the school’s next head coach, bringing him over from Valdosta High School in Georgia.
Most around the area believed it would certainly be a rebuilding year — everyone except Lacey.
