Winona High School’s girls and boys basketball teams played a pair of Region 3-3A games last week.
On Jan. 9, both teams played host to Amanda Elzy. The Lady Tigers dropped a close 38-33 decision, while the Tigers fell 53-28 to the Panthers.
In the girls game, Winona and Elzy both scored six points each in the first frame and the home team took a 16-14 lead at the half. The Lady Tigers led 25-23 after the third period, but Elzy outscored WHS 15-8 in the final eight minutes.
Markeshia Burnett led Winona with 14 points, and Mikhalah Coker and Arielle Jones had six points each.
In the boys game, Elzy steadily pulled away as it led 12-6 after one, 28-9 at the half and 39-21 after the third period.
Yoshawn Hudson had eight points, and the trio of Darrion Crawford, Ethan Miller and Jaidan Greenleaf had four points each for the Tigers.
Winona played at Yazoo County last Friday night. The Lady Tigers fell 63-24 as Yazoo led 22-5 after one, 36-16 at the half and 51-20 after the third.
Burnett led Winona (5-11 overall, 0-4 in district) with 12 points. Jones tacked on seven points.
In the boys game, Yazoo County beat the Tigers 66-27. Chance Richardson had nine points, and Hudson tallied eight for Winona (3-13, 0-4).
Winona, which was slated to host district foe Humphreys County Tuesday, visits J.Z. George Thursday night.
