As Winona prepares for a scrimmage with Senatobia Friday and the season opener with Eupora a week later, Coach Joey Tompkins is pleased with the showing by the team's sophomores in practice.
“Some of our younger guys, some of our 10th graders, have stepped up,” he said. “They have been able to do a little more than we anticipated. That's always a bright spot.”
He added “I'm looking for my seniors to step it up a little more.”
Friday’s scrimmage will include two quarters by the varsity and one quarter for the junior varsity.
“It's just a practice game,” Tompkins said. “We're not going over there to try and outscore them.
It will be an opportunity for some of the younger players to show what they can do.
“We have some kids who played a lot last year. We're not going to go over there (Oxford) and run them to death.”
Areas of interest will include linebackers and the offensive line.
“We know what we have at quarterback (senior An'Darius Coffey) and running back (junior Blake Cooper). So anything besides quarterback and running back, we're looking to see some guys step up and show some maturity,”
