The Winona-Montgomery County Consolidated School Board has approved volleyball as an interscholastic sport for Winona, beginning in the fall.
Volleyball replaces slow-pitch softball as a fall sport for girls. The Mississippi High School Activities Association has discontinued slow-pitch due to a declining number of schools fielding teams, the first order of business is to find a coach. Athletic director Charlies Parkerson said the position will be advertised. The final decision will need school board approval.
A survey of Winona’s female students showed an overwhelming support for volleyball.
The team will compete as an independent during the 2020-21 school year, but will be able to join a region in subsequent years. More than two dozen schools will add volleyball in the fall due to the end of slow pitch. There were 153 MHSAA schools with volleyball teams during the current school year.
Realignment of classes and regions for all MHSAA sports, based on school enrollments, will begin with the 2021-22 school year and schools competing as independents will be placed in a region.
