The J.Z. George boys made it to the championship game of the Region 2-2A Tournament last week at East Webster High School in Maben, dropping a 95-46 decision to Calhoun City in the title contest last Friday.
The Jaguars (9-14) finished as the No. 2 seed, which enabled them to play at home Tuesday night in the first round of the State 2A Tournament in North Carrollton against Madison St. Joseph. A win would send J.Z. George to the second round Saturday night against the victor of the Coahoma County-East Union contest at 6.
Against Calhoun City, the Wildcats broke out to a 24-14 lead after the first period and went on a 29-15 run in the second frame for a commanding 63-29 lead at the half. Calhoun led 84-41 after the third quarter.
D'Anthony McGlothan had 27 points, and Malik Branch finished with seven. Alex Chriss had six points.
The Jaguars, who came in as the No. 3 seed for the region tournament, beat No. 2 seed Eupora 69-40 behind Branch's 25-point night. J.Z. George led 16-10 after one, 41-21 at the half and 60-28 after the third frame.
McGlothan tacked on 11 points, and Chriss had 10. Jordun Normal tallied seven points.
The Lady Jaguars played three games at the region tournament, going 1-2. They dropped a 41-36 decision to Bruce in the consolation game Friday, which placed them fourth for the State 2A Tournament out of Region 2, earning them a first-round game at Pelahatchie Monday.
Pelahatchie came out on top 47-35 in a tight contest for three quarters. The Lady Jags, who finish with a 7-19 overall record, trailed 17-10 after one, 26-20 at the half and 32-27 after the third period.
Tashanda Fleming led J.Z. George with 17 points. Jakyla Winters hit for eight, and Jasmine Newman and Tyeshia Grant had three each.
Against Bruce, J.Z. George led 9-8 after one but trailed 16-9 at the half and 27-21 after the third period.
Fleming had 12 points for the Lady Jags, and Winters tallied 11. Grant notched six points.
In a semifinal game last Thursday against Calhoun City, the Lady Wildcats prevailed 62-50 as they led 26-9 after one, 42-22 at the half and 59-33 after the third frame.
Fleming had a team-high 21 for J.Z. George, and Winters tacked on 18. Aniya Williams had seven points.
The Lady Jags opened the tournament with a 52-39 win over Eupora in the play-in game. They only led 9-8 after the first period and made it 20-16 at the half. They led by three at 30-27 at the end of the third period.
Winters led the way with 13 points, and Fleming tacked on 12. Williams had 10 points, and Newman tallied four.
