A lack of games didn’t hurt Winona Christian too much this past week as they swept a pair of district games from Marshall Academy.
The Stars opened the week with an 8-6 win over the Patriots and finished off the two-game sweep with a 5-2 win on Thursday.
Winona, now 4-3 on the season and 2-0 in district play, will square off with Central Holmes this week as they host the Trojans on Tuesday and travel there on Thursday in their only scheduled games this week.
Winona Christian 8, Marshall 6
The Stars overcame four errors and took advantage of seven walks as they took a two-run win over district foe Marshall.
After a scoreless first two innings, Winona scored three runs in the top of the third and led 3-2 after the inning. After a scoreless fourth inning, Winona broke through with five runs in the top of the fifth to lead 8-2. Marshall scored four in the bottom of the fifth but Winona held on for the win.
Winona had seven hits in the contest as Blake Marlow was 3-for-5 with a double and one RBI. Latham Hill was 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs. Shaw Ferguson was 2-for-2 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Austin Huggins also had a double while Treyton Whitten singled. Wyatt Chamblee walked twice and scored while Reed Roberts, Dalton Wiggins and Thomas Costilow each scored.
Jay Evans, Marlow and Wiggins each had two stolen bases apiece.
Austin Huggins got the start and the win as he pitched 4 2/3 innings as he gave up six runs on six hits and three walks while striking out 10. Blake Marlow pitched the final 2 1/3 innings and got the save as the junior didn’t give up a run while giving up one hit and two walks while striking out two.
Winona Christian 5, Marshall 2
The Stars built a 4-0 lead and used solid pitching to take a three-run win and sweep the Patriots.
Winona scored two in the first and third innings and added an insurance run in the sixth. Marshall scored one in the fourth and sixth innings.
Winona had nine hits in the contest as Latham Hill was 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI. Wyatt Chambley was 2-for-3 while Jay Evans was 2-for-2. Dalton Wiggins scored twice while Shaw Ferguson had a single and drove in a run. Treyton Whitten had a single and scored a run.
Blake Marlow pitched six innings and gave up two runs on six hits and two walks as he struck out nine. Whitten got the save as he pitched the seventh and gave up one hit and struck out two batters.
