Like most area basketball teams, the weather was the big winner last week.
But the Lady Rebels of Carroll Academy did manage to squeeze in a victory as they beat Oak Hill 58-49 while the Rebels dropped a 54-35 decision to the Raiders Last Friday’s game at Kirk was cancelled and will not be made up.
The Rebels were scheduled to play Central Holmes on Tuesday but that game was postponed because of weather and a makeup date has not been set. Carroll will host Marshall on Friday and then host Oak Hill on Tuesday, Jan. 23 and travel to Holly Springs on Friday, Jan. 26 to take on Marshall again. They will close out the regular season on Monday, Jan. 29 with a home game against Benton.
The Lady Rebels overcame a first-half deficit and took a nine-point division win over Oak Hill last week.
Oak Hill led 17-10 at the end of the first period but Carroll responded with a big second period, outscoring the Raiders 17-8 to take a 27-25 lead into the half. After outscoring Oak Hill 16-16 in the third period, Carroll started to pull away in the final frame as they outscored the Lady Raiders 15-9 to take the win.
Caroline Mumme led Carroll with 15 points and four steals. Sandy Rhea Tackett had 13 points and five rebounds while Belle Sanders had 11 points and six rebounds. Lainey Claire Dunn also had five rebounds in the win.
Rebels
The OHA Raiders outscored the Rebels in every period to take the 54-35 win.
The Raiders led 13-10 at the end of the first but outscored the Rebels 16-9 in the second to lead 29-19 at the half. It didn’t get any better in the second half as Oak hill outscored Carroll 15-6 in the third to lead 44-25 heading to the fourth.
“I know we are young and are built for the future, we just need to get them where they need to be,” Carroll coach Tommy Acy said. “I feel like if we could put a whole game together, we would be a good basketball team. The third quarter is our achilles. We come out of halftime and just don’t play very well. We start slow and the other team has a spurt and gets ahead and we just can’t overcome that.
“But we are hosting the district tournament and I think that’s wide open on the boys side. We are playing at home and no travel and hopefully that will help us.”
Reese Fulton led Carroll with 19 points and 12 rebounds while Michael O’Brien had six points and Morgan Mims added five.
