While the J.Z. George baseball team has yet to squeeze in a game to start the 2020 season, the Lady Jaguars' fast-pitch softball team did play their first game last Thursday and is off to a 1-0 start.
The Lady Jaguars blasted Holmes County Central 21-1 at Holmes Community College as senior Laney Clunan got the win in the circle, allowing the one run, which was scored on an error, fanning four, hitting one batter and walking one.
J.Z. George, which was scheduled to play at French Camp Monday but had the game canceled because of weather, finished with 10 hits against Holmes. Junior Olivia Carpenter had a single, two doubles, two RBI and scored four runs.
Sophomore Jayden McLendon and Clunan had two hits each. McLendon had two singles and scored a pair of runs, and Clunan had two singles and scored three times.
Senior Makayla Vest had a single, RBI and scored three times, and senior Jasmine Newman has a single, two RBI and scored one run. Senior Tyeshia Grant had a single, RBI and scored three times. Senior Tashanda Fleming drove in two runs and scored two.
Freshmen Christyanna Seals and Paigelan Shack scored two runs each.
The Lady Jaguars play host to Holmes County Thursday at 5 p.m., weather permitting.
The J.Z. George baseball team has had two games postponed because of weather and three canceled altogether. The Jaguars host Charleston Saturday at 1 p.m.
