The J.Z. George girls basketball team got off to a good start in Region 2-2A play with a 44-29 victory over Eupora High School last Friday in Eupora.
The Lady Jaguars, who improved to 5-12 with the win, held a 13-7 lead after the first frame. The Lady Eagles outscored J.Z. George 10-9 in the second period to trail 22-17 at the half. A 16-2 run in the third period for the visitors from North Carrollton gave them a 38-19 advantage headed to the fourth quarter.
The Lady Jags got a team-high 15 points from junior Jakyla Winters. Senior guard Jasmine Newman tacked on eight points, and senior guard Tashanda Fleming chipped in seven.
The Jaguars let another close one slip away as the Eagles posted a 59-52 victory to drop J.Z. George to 6-11 overall.
Eupora led 12-11 after one, but the Jags took a 24-22 advantage at the half. Eupora led 39-38 after the third.
Junior Keldrick Glover paced the Jaguars with 15 points. Sophomore D’Anthony McGlothan had 12 points, and freshman guard Rodney Catron had seven points.
J.Z. George played host to Region 2 foe Calhoun City Tuesday and entertains Bruce in a district game Friday. The Lady Jags and Jaguars close out the district slate with an away game at East Webster on Feb. 28.
