Carroll Academy football Coach Bo Milton knew going into the season that the Rebels would be thin at spots with only 22 players on the roster.
Then last week, five of the Carroll football players were in a wreck and four of them had to sit out of the scrimmage, leaving the Rebels shorthanded for a Friday scrimmage with Winston Academy.
“I thought we did well,” Milton said. “We had five of our players in a wreck and four of them didn’t play. We only had 16 of them participate. But I thought we held up. Defensively, I thought we played really well. We saw some good things on both sides. I thought it was a positive scrimmage for us.”
With the lack of players, Milton said it gave some second-team guys more reps than they would normally get.
“Depth is still a concern,” Milton said. “Even though we got to see some guys who don’t normally get that many snaps with the first team. The plus side for us that because we had four kids who couldn’t play, we got some guys some major playing time. Maybe they can step up and give us that depth that we are looking for.”
Milton said he thought his team controlled the Patriots and hit some big plays.
“We popped the first play for 75 yards and hit a bootleg pass for 40 yards,” Milton said. “It’s hard to tell on a 10-play scrimmage. I didn’t think we finished on our first drive. We have to be a little better at the point of attack and do a better job blocking up front.”
The Rebels will now travel to Tri-County on Thursday to play a multi-team jamboree. The Rebels will start the jamboree at 3:30 p.m. as they play Newton County Academy, a team they beat 25-6 last year. They will end the day at 5 p.m. against Central Hinds.
