The Town of Vaiden can feel the benefits of its new tourism tax. During their board meeting Monday night, Mayor Mel Hawthorne reported that the town received $909 in tourism tax in the month of January. He said they’re waiting to receive their numbers back from the Department of Revenue to see how well they did in February.
Also, during their meeting, the board voted that before a person is hired as a police officer in Vaiden, they must graduate from the police academy.
He said an officer, whom he did not identify, came before the board seeking employment. On paper, the officer sounded good. He’d did worked in a town in Holmes County before. but he had not been to the police academy.
Hawthorne said after presenting the information to the board and to Board Attorney Lane Greenlee, it was decided by the board that any officer seeking employment in Vaiden must have gone through the Academy first.
He said he was told what the officer could do was limited and that wouldn’t suit the needs of Vaiden.
Also, the board:
• Voted to change out public phone system over to CSpire.
• Voted to pass the 2009 Participation Plan as part of their application for a grant the town of Vaiden is applying for.
