WINONA -- A special celebration is being held this Saturday at the Winona National Guard Armory.
According to Calbrina Woods, event organizer and family readiness volunteer, from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m., guardsmen and their families of Battery B, 2nd, 114th Field Artillery, headquartered in Winona and Kosciusko will enjoy dinner, entertainment, and activities for the kids.
“This is a celebration in their honor,” Woods said. “I want to make it memorable.”
The unit is expected to mobilize and head oversees after the new year.
According to Woods, many people in the community are helping make the evening special.
“The fifth grade [at Winona Elementary School] are making cards for the soldiers,” Woods said. “I’m so excited about that.”
The Junior Auxiliary will be assisting with children activities, and the Girl Scout Troop # 33157 will lead the Pledge of Allegiance.
“The Winona Baptist Praise Team will be singing,” said Woods. “And family photos will be taken, which is what I think is the most important part.”
Woods said the event would not be possible without the support of local sponsors.
Captain Timothy Bailey, Bravo Battery Commanders, thanked Woods for her ongoing efforts to support the unit.
“Mrs. Woods has done an awesome job so these guys have a good time before mobilization,” Bailey said.
Bailey said the unit recently returned from training in California, and the group trains regularly at Camp Shelby near Hattiesburg.
