How can you make your city more inviting?
Thanks to a new citizen-led initiative to keep Winona safe and clean, Monday will begin the first week-long challenge to the residents of Winona to spruce up their yards and homes to make Winona look its very best.
Tuesday night, “enthusiastic” volunteers met at Winona City Hall to finalize plans for the personal property clean up week and Saturday’s big clean up throughout the city.
“This is just the start,” Harrison said. “This is just the beginning of what we want to do.”
During October 16 through 20, Winona’s residents have been challenged to cut their grass, edge or cut grass growing over the street curb, sweep up all grass clippings and dispose of them properly, and place all limbs and sticks at the side of the street for pickup.
For those with rubbish items that will not fit in a city-issued garbage can, trash bins are located at the city barn. The garbage bins will accept appliances, furniture, large items that do not fit in the can, Paint cans household chemicals and batteries. Metal items must be placed beside the dumpster.
Harrison encouraged residents to check out the My Winona Facebook page and post before and after photos.
“We are trying to get the word out,” Harrison said. “The most important thing is the people. The more people who will participate the better.”
According to Dr. Louie Harrison, who was behind the My Winona initiative, on the morning of September 21, residents are asked to meet in the parking lot of Winona High School to be given instructions for the big clean up.
“The Winona Aldermen will give directions of where to go for their wards,” Harrison said.
Gloves will be provided Saturday for volunteers.
At the end of the day, the trash picked up in each Ward will be weighed, and the Ward with the largest weight of trash will win a trophy and an entire year of bragging rights. The trophy will sit in the foyer of the Winona City Hall.
