A Greenwood man died in an automobile accident Monday afternoon, but police say a medical emergency may have caused the crash.
According to Captain Dan Herod, chief investigator with the Winona Police Department, said Michael Austin Taylor, 47, died at the scene after striking another fellow motorist and driving into a fast food restaurant on Highway 82 near Interstate 55 in Winona.
Herod said on Monday, December 17, at 2:30 p.m., officers responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident with injuries on Highway 82 in front of McDonald’s restaurant.
He said it was determined that a Mercury Grand Marquis, driven by Taylor, was headed west on Highway 82 when he left the roadway on the north side, veered through the Subway restaurant parking lot, jumped the curb, and entered the McDonald’s parking lot. Herod said during the melee, Taylor’s vehicle struck a passing motorist before crashing into the east side of the McDonald’s restaurant.
The Winona Fire Department had to extricate Taylor from the vehicle by using the Jaws Of Life.
“It appeared that Mr. Taylor may have suffered from some type of medical emergency that led to the cause of the accident,” Herod said.
The Winona Police Department, the Winona Fire Department and MedStat all responded to the scene.
