WINONA – Winona Librarian Wendy Rushing and Assistant Librarian Dina Kilburn gave the Winona Mayor and Board of Aldermen an update on the happenings at the Winona Montgomery Public Library.
According to Kilburn, from July through November, the library hosted 14,169 patrons; 9,123 items were checked out; 2,226 computers were used; and 19 programs drew 540 attendees.
Rushing said the fall was a busy time for the library and the library staff. In August, she visited Winona Elementary School and Winona Christian School to speak with first graders about getting their first library card; in October, a monthly adult coloring class began to great success; story time is held at First Baptist Church Pre-School every other Friday; and special events like JA Boo Party and the annual Christmas Pajama Parties were held.
In other city news:
• Animal Control Officer Arlin Pearson issued a warning to those living in the vicinity of Montgomery Street that a vicious dog was on the loose after chewing his way through the pen and surrounding fence at the Winona Animal Shelter. The dog is a brown and white, short-haired terrier mix. Pearson warned residents to keep an eye on their pets until the dog is captured.
• No action was taken on the unkempt property at 107 Sterling Avenue.
• The board voted to accept Bank of Winona as the city’s bank depository for the next two years. Alderman David Ware abstained from the vote, and Alderwoman Sarah Minnieweather was absent.
• At the recommendation of Chief of Police Tommy Bibbs, the board voted to hire Anna McComb as a patrol officer with the Winona Police Department. McComb comes from the Birmingham Police Department. McComb, who is a certified instructor for Field Sobriety and other areas, said she decided to move to Winona to start a better life for her family.
“My heart is in this job,” McComb said. “I want to be more community involved.”
• Wayne Beavers with the Winona Street Department, who was filling in for Street Superintendent Tony Palmertree who is out for illness, recommended the board hire Cedric Daniels as an operator for the department, and the board approved the hire.
•The board accepted the resignation of Chelsea Edwards as the Winona Court Clerk.
