This summer I did something I had never done before and that was pick blueberries. Now I have picked a lot of vegetables over the years, as any good country kid has, but never blueberries.
As I began the job of picking blueberries, I learned it was going to take a lot of patience to get this job done. To pick blueberries you have to go slowly, you have to look at each little one to see if they are ready, and you even have to go back and recheck areas because sometimes blueberries are hidden under some leaves.
I really wanted to just grab the berries up in my hand, take them all at the same time and that would be the end of it, but that was not going to work. Patience was prayed for at that time. Patience to not give up or get overly frustrated and to stick it out till my buckets were full.
It was hot, I was tired, and my arms were heavy, but I was patient and was rewarded with a couple buckets of blueberries.
We all know people who quit easily, who get frustrated quickly, and move on to something else if it takes too long or takes too much energy, but that's why people with the fruit of patience stand out above the rest. Patience is a hard thing to learn, but the rewards are great and worth it.
This week, whatever you're doing, whether waiting in line at McDonalds, picking blueberries, or waiting for information, pray for patience, practice patience, and let the Lord help you become a bearer for this fruit.
