The Winona Christian Stars only got in one game last week but made it count.
The Stars got a stellar pitching performance from senior Austin Huggins, who struck out a season-high 16 batters to take a 5-2 win over Central Holmes in a key district contest.
Winona Christian’s Thursday contest with Central Holmes was rained out and a makeup date has not been set yet.
Winona has a big two-game series this week with Carroll. Game 1 of the series was set for Carroll on Tuesday, and Game 2 of the series will be Thursday at WCS at 6 p.m.

Winona scored one in the top of the first and Central Holmes answered with two in the bottom of the first and second innings. Trailing 2-1, Winona scored one in the third and fourth innings and added two insurance runs in the fifth inning.
Winona Christian had just five hits. Treyton Whitten had a big two-run single while Latham Hill and Austin Huggins each had RBI singles. Blake Marlow had a triple while Choyce Diffey and Reed Roberts each had two walks apiece. Dalton Wiggins scored twice.
Huggins, a Meridian Community College signee, got the start on the mound and pitched six-and-one-third innings as he gave up two unearned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out a season-high 16 batters. Treyton Whitten pitched the final two-thirds of an inning and struck out the only two batters he faced to get the save.
