Winona Christian got some strong pitching this past week as the Stars limited Carroll Academy to five hits in two games.
Austin Huggins gave up just two hits on Tuesday as the Stars took a 14-2 run-rule victory while Blake Marlow gave up three hits on Thursday in a 12-3 win.
Winona Christian will likely determine its playoff position this week as the Stars take on Oak Hill in a battle the last two state champions. Game one of the series is set for Tuesday at Oak Hill and the Raiders will make the return trip to Winona on Thursday.
Carroll returns to action this week as it hosts Marshall on Tuesday and will make the trip to Holly Springs to take on the Patriots on Friday. Carroll will finish out the regular season the following week as it will host Humphreys on Monday will travel to Kirk on Thursday, April 19.
Winona Christian 14, Carroll 2
The Stars only had four hits but took advantage of eight errors and 10 walks by Carroll to take a five-inning, run-rule victory on Tuesday.
Winona scored two in the first and second innings while Carroll scratched single runs in the second and third innings. Winona finished off the game by scoring three in the third and seven in the fourth.
Winona had just four hits in the contest. Blake Marlow had a double and drove in two runs while Shaw Ferguson had a single, one RBI and scored twice. Latham Hill and Treyton Whitten each had a single, RBI and scored twice. Jay Evans, Dalton Wiggins and Reed Roberts each scored twice in the contest while Wyatt Chambley walked three times.
Winona had 10 stolen bases in the contest as Chambley, Ferguson, Roberts and Wiggins each had two stolen bases apiece.
Huggins got the start on the mound for Winona and gave up two unearned runs on two hits while striking out four.
Carroll had just two hits in the contest as Noah Collier singled and scored. Dane Greenlee had Carroll’s other hit while Colby Holley scored the Rebels’ other run.
Andrew Montgomery got the start for Carroll and pitched three innings and gave up seven runs on three hits and six walks while striking out two. Lofton Holly pitched 2/3 of an inning and gave up seven runs on one hit and, three walks and two hit batters. Bubba Porter pitched the last 2/3 of an inning without giving up a hit or run.

The Stars completed the series sweep with a pair of five-runs innings on Thursday.
Carroll scratched a run in the top of the first inning before Winona scored five runs in the bottom of the first and third innings to go up 10-1. Each team scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings for the final runs.
Winona had nine hits in the contest, led by Treyton Whitten who was 2-for-4 with a home run, three runs scored and four RBIs. Austin Huggins was 3-for-4 with two runs scored by Latham Hill had a single and two RBIs. Shaw Ferguson and Blake Marlow each had doubles and one RBI while Cade Marlow had Winona’s other hit.
Winona had nine stolen bases as Cade Marlow and Whitten each had two apiece.
Carroll managed just two hits in the contest and struck out 15 times on the day. Noah Collier had an RBI single and scored a run while Gavin Wiltshire had a double, two walks and scored. Colby Holley walked twice, stole two base and scored a run.
Blake Marlow got the start on the mound for WCS and pitched 5 1/3 innings as he gave up three runs on two hits and five walks while striking out 12 to pick up the win. Whitten pitched the final 1 1/3 innings and struck out three.
Noah Collier got the start and pitched one inning and gave up five runs on three hits and two walks while Bubba Porter pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up five runs on three hits and three walks. Lofton Holley pitched the final 3 2/3 innings and gave up two unearned runs on three hits.
