Incumbent trustee for the Carroll County School Board Beat 3 Daniel Vest was defeated by challenger William E. Downs, 438 to 326.
Downs will be joined on the board by John Phillips, who defeated challenger Martha Foreman Simpson, 625 to 276. Phillip will fill the seat vacated by Laura Davis who did not seek re-election.
These are the official certified results, according to Carroll County Circuit Clerk Durward Stanton.
A former educator, Downs previously worked for the Greenwood Public School District and the former Winona Separate School District. At Greenwood High and Winona High, Downs taught auto mechanics and coached football and high school girl’s track. He said he also drove a bus.
Downs, 58, is a member of Centerville Baptist Church, and he and his wife Angie have one daughter, Lani Downs Mulvihill. He’s employed with Barrentine Trailers.
John L. Phillips, 65, has 32 ½ years of experience in education and has worked as a head football coach, basketball coach, and athletic director. He also worked as a mentor and tutor at J.Z. George and Marshall. He also has 30 years of military experience and is a First Sergeant in the Army National Guard. Phillips and his wife, the former Deborah L. Owens, have two daughters, Mary L. Bishop and Jo’Niece L. Phillips.
