Winona hosted a cross-country meet, the Winona Cross Country Invitational, last week and finished fifth in the boys’ race.
Carson Holly was the Tigers’ top runner, finishing sixth out of 73 runners with a time of 19:28.87 for 5,000 meters. Sam Matriasciano was 26th (22:00.52), Noah Durham 30th (22:22.84); Jabraelle Davis 48th (25:49.17) and Conner Privitt, a seventh grader, 49th (25:49.55).
“I thought we did really well,” said Coach Chris McRae. “What I was really most impressed with was our seventh grade boys, how well they ran.”
In addition to Privitt, three other seventh graders competed for Winona. Ahmaud Seawood was 50th in 25:52.93, Thomas Rosamond 63rd in 28:33.64 and Jemorius Sanders 64th in 28:50.62.
Spencer Davis led South Panola to the team title with a winning time of 18:04.71.
Winona had three participants in the girls’ race, not enough for a team score. Kaylee Rice was 12th in a field of 47 with a clocking of 28:04.43. Bailey Holly was 25th in 31:32.74 and Amya Phillips 37th in 35:39.65.
Cleveland Central with 41 points, edged Kosciusko (42) and East Webster (44) for the team title.
J.Z. George participated in the meet, finishing ninth for boys and fourth for girls. Winona will host the Region 2-3A and Region 2-2A meets Thursday. The state meet will be Saturday, Nov. 3 at Choctaw Trails in Jackson.
