Velma Keyes Kirk, died on Monday, November 11, 2019.
Visitation was Tuesday, Nov. 12, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. and Wednesday, Nov. 13, from 1 p.m. until service began at 2 p.m., both at Oliver Funeral Home. Rev. Terry Corley and Dr. David Sartin officiated. Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery in Winona.
Velma was born June 21, 1941, in Terry, and attended Terry High School.
She married Cecil Kirk in Jackson, on February 14, 1987. They enjoyed a warm and loving relationship highlighted by trips covering many states in the United States, and also Canada and Mexico. After she retired from Kroger in Jackson, they moved to Montgomery County in 1998, where they made many friends in the area. She was a member of Scotland Baptist Church in Winona.
Like many people who are the youngest in the family, Velma's interests throughout her life focused largely on activities that were entertaining. The highlight of her years at Terry High School was receiving dance lessons from Mrs. Anna Bee, the late celebrated director of the Hinds Community College Hi-Steppers. During her retirement, she and Cecil regularly hosted reunions for their Terry and Winona friends. Being with people she cared about brought great joy into Velma's life, as her many friends know.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Annie Harper Keyes; sisters, Freda Whittington, LaPearl Maddox, Gladys Teasley and Patsy Harris; and brother, Charles Keyes.
She is survived by her loving husband, Cecil Kirk; daughter, Cheryl Johnson; son, Kevin Berryhill (Lindia); stepson, Kenneth Kirk; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Christine French and Maxine Butts; brother, John Keyes (Josie); half-brother, Rev. Percy Campbell; and many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Barry Reedy, Joey Evans, Zack Williams, Michael Rubio, Cannon Kirk, and Dwayne Lishman. Honorary pallbearers were Dynamite Kirk, Dr. Keith Rushing, Steven Stoker, Chris Adams, John Burnern Cox, Jerry Hovas, Frank Jones, Nig O'Neal, Gary Kirk, Charles South, and Michael Sykes.
Memorials in her name may be made to the Shiloh Cemetery Fund, PO Box 182, Duck Hill, MS 38925.
