Joseph Eugene “Gene” York
Joseph Eugene “Gene” York, 78, of Carrollton, MS, died Tuesday, November 20, 2018 at Greenwood Leflore Hospital. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, November 24, 2018 at Williams & Lord Funeral Home with visitation at 10 a.m. until service time. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. in LDS Cemetery, Truslow Community, near Senatobia, MS. President Don Rowe will officiate at the services.
Mr. York was born July 4, 1940, in Sledge, MS, to the late John Henry York and Christine Jenkins York. He was a graduate of Crenshaw High School and resided in Greenwood since 1971. He was retired from the Federal Compress. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He also retired from the military in 1989, having served 5 years in the Air Force and 17 ½ years in the Army National Guard. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Stacey York and Terri York; two sisters, Claudette Jones and Lynn Self; and nephew, Danny Jones.
Mr. York is survived by his wife of 54 years, Violet Berry York of Carrollton, MS; daughter, Kristi Leigh Herbert (Jim) of McCarley, MS; son, Joseph York of Carrollton, MS; brother, Sam York ( Barbara Joyce) of Sommerville, TN; sister, Joyce Houston of Strayhorn, MS; five grandchildren, Clay Herbert (Janie), Keely Herbert, Kadi-Leigh Herbert, Braxton York, and McKenzi York; two great-grandchildren, Annabel and Matthew Herbert; six nephews, two nieces, and numerous great nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Joseph York, Jim Herbert, Clay Herbert, Braxton York, Jon Upp, Chase Haynie, and Brantley Simmons. Honorary pallbearers will be Jeff York, Kelly York, David Ray, Marty Houston, and Conner Pierce. Military Rites will be conducted by Keesler-Hamrick-Gillespie American Legion Post 29 Honor Guard.
